PEGASE dealt with the High and Extra High Voltage transmission and sub-transmission networks in Europe (designated as ETN).
This project was in association with different industrial partners and Transmission System Operator (TSO) European as RTE in France, RED in Spain, REN in Portugal, etc.
Its overall objectives were to define the most appropriate state estimation, optimization and simulation frameworks and their performance and dataflow requirements to achieve an integrated security analysis and control of the ETN.
The heart of the PEGASE project involved advanced algorithmic, build prototypes of software and demonstrated the feasibility of real-time state estimation (SE), multi purpose constrained optimization (OPF) and time domain simulation of very large model representative of the ETN, taking into account its operation by multiple Time-Sharing Operating System.
The first ambition of PEGASE was to provide for all Time-Sharing Operating System a synchronous display of the state of the ETN, very close to real time. The second was to develop OPF programs determining realistic system operating points that include Time-Sharing Operating rules but also optimal preventive or corrective actions, typically for real-time congestion management.
The project developed a computational platform based on Scilab/Xcos, for the certification and the exchange of models between different organizations. Before, models were “hard coded” in language as C or FORTRAN or represented using custom macro languages. Using this type of coding the interchange of models was very difficult to handle and the comparison between two simulations of the same system was almost impossible. The project looked for a general purpose « universal language » usable to describe and simulate electrical power systems components: the Modelica open standard language (Xcos blocks) and Scilab (as mathematical models description language) has been considered.
