Final review about ACTIVOPT project results

Interconnection needs between software extend. Thus, software editors can no longer stand alone to meet market and users needs. In that context, ACTIVOPT project, which aimed at reinforcing interoperability to improve productivity and innovation, found a special echo among market participants.

In fact being interoperable allows complementary software to openly exchange data and algorithms. For example, a software specialist in a scientific field can delegate the resolution of a problem to a third party software. The development team of the specialized software saves the development costs of a third component while helping to increase the visibility of the third party software on the market.

Thus, the involvement of the Scilab Consortium in ACTIVOPT project was to ensure better interoperability between Scilab and other software allowing them, for example, to use effectively and easily the computing and visualizing capabilities of Scilab.

Since Scilab 5.2.0, several technical developments reveal significant improvements in terms of Scilab capacity to call a third component or to be called himself:

For C and C++ languages:

Implementation of a new API
This programming interface allows to easily and efficiently interconnecting a library with Scilab computation engine
Rewriting of call_scilab
This feature greatly improves the use of Scilab as a computation engine by third party software

For Java language:

Development of javasci v2
This interface allows Scilab to be called from a Java third party software

ACTIVOPT project benefits and the integration of these developments in Scilab are already bearing fruit. Besides a strong functional improvement of the software, Scilab is interconnected increasingly with other software (ModeFrontier of ESTECO s.r.l, the future version of ProActive by Activeon ...).
